On November 25, CAPP-Canada, in partnership with the Newman Centre of McGill University, the Catholic Church of Montreal and Newman Institute of Catholic Studies presented a panel discussion on Rerum Novarum: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
The panelists thoughtful conversation has deepened our understanding of Pope Leo XIII’s groundbreaking encyclical, as well as Pope Leo XIV's choice of name.
Yesterday (1891): Rerum Novarum confronted the upheavals of the Industrial Revolution, defining justice for workers and responsibilities for employers and governments.
Today: Its principles continue to guide debates on fair wages, human dignity, and the balance between economic growth and social responsibility.
Tomorrow: It challenges us to apply its wisdom to new realities — from globalization to digital labor — ensuring justice and dignity remain central to society’s progress.

Many heartfelt thanks to Archbishop Christian Lépine, Dr. Cecil Chabot, Prof. Danielle Morin, and Prof. Cory Labrecque, whose presence and thoughtful words were a gift to us all.
And a special thank you to all the Newman Centre staff, especially Rev. Dr. Anthony Atansi, Chaplain of the Newman Centre and Adjunct Professor in McGill's School of Religious Studies, who spearheaded the organization of this event.
The video from the event will be available shortly.
